September’s Member Spotlight is Jim Segrest! Jim has been a member of CrossFit Bensalem since this past April. In the past 5 months, Jim has taken amazing strides in his performance in the gym. More than anything it’s his positive attitude and striving to better himself one day at a time that is infectious and motivating to the people around him. The support Jim gives in the gym extends home as well. Over the summer, Jim’s daughter Chrissy joined the CFB family during her summer break. Always willing to put in the work, Jim has seen immense progress over the past 5 months. Wanting to improve his endurance, Jim has been putting in extra running work each day after class. I have no doubt Jim will continue to crush the goals he has set out for himself next! Losing 140 pounds and no longer having diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol is just the beginning…
CFB: Tell us a little bit of your background prior to joining CFB?
Jim: In my adult life, I had let my health degrade from being an athlete as a young adult to finding myself obese with Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol approaching 40. I decided to make a life change and start “Eating to Live” instead of “Living to Eat” and increased my exercise among other things to create change in my overall health.
CFB: What made you want to first give CrossFit a try?
Jim: As I lost enough weight to start to take my exercise to the next level I found it important to as I continue to lose weight to maintain my muscle and lose the right weight slower rather than lose too much muscle mass. I have coached high-level softball for years and have known girls who have done very well with CrossFit so I decided to give it a try.
CFB. How has CrossFit impacted that and your life outside of the gym?
Jim: CrossFit is something I’ve built into my daily routine, I don’t feel right on a day I don’t enter the box and complete a WOD, To CFB specifically the members have become friends I’m excited to see when I enter the box.
CFB: What’s your favorite thing about CFB?
Jim: My favorite thing about CFB specifically is the support of the members, when your pushing yourself to finish a WOD and are struggling to continue is when I can hear my friends saying “Jim keep going, you got this”, it makes a huge difference. My favorite thing about CrossFit is challenging myself and continuing to get better every day.
CFB: What is one goal you have this year?
Jim: I honestly have tons of goals this year but they all revolve around just getting better every day, I have lost almost 140lbs and no longer have Diabetes, High Blood Pressure or High Cholesterol so my goals now are gravy I have already changed my life. But I would like to work towards Pull Ups with no band, Hand Stand Pushups and being able to master a double under in 2019.
CFB: What is one piece of advice that you would give someone considering CrossFit Bensalem or a new CrossFit?
Jim: Honestly just try it come in for a workout or two and experience it, realizing it’s gonna be hard, just come in and do your best and have fun.
CFB: What do you see as your greatest improvement as well as some other results from doing CrossFit?
Jim: My greatest improvement has been my overall fitness level and core strength though neither is where I would like them to be but I am very happy with the results in the months since starting CrossFit.
